Do you believe Meg Whitman?

Understandably, many people believe that Meg Whitman, the failed CEO of eBay who is running for governor of California, is bending the truth when she claims that she had no idea that her maid of nine years, Nicandra Díaz de Santillán, was an undocumented immigrant.

After hearing Díaz’s story, and reading all the available documents in this kangaroo court called The American Public (I can’t stand that this is a TMZ exclusive because they are cheapening the discussion to a low-brow sport), the evidence seems stacked against Whitman.

Whitman allegedly threw out letters from the Social Security Administration, notifying her that Díaz’s Social Security Number doesn’t match her name and does not exist as such in their database. Note to Whitman: Your maid is the person who throws out your trash. Maybe she assumed Díaz couldn’t read English?

Díaz’s celebrity attorney, Gloria Allred, lays out a list of allegations that make Whitman look like a monster boss. Among the allegations:  Whitman made Díaz spend extra hours doing other housework for the same amount of pay and told her she may lose her job if she takes maternity leave. Could this be true? Whitman has been embroiled in a previous allegation that she got pushy — literally — with one of her subordinates.

While I think Whitman could take a hit from the news bombshell, I am more concerned about the reverberating effects it will have on undocumented immigrants. Hate crimes are already on the rise and I worry that the way the fear-mongerers are going to play it, on Hate Radio and Hate TV, might incite one of their minions to feel justified in beating a person because he suspects the person is an undocumented immigrant.

  1. Meg, Meg, Meg, where do I start, you have reportedly spent $119 million of your own money to get elected Governor but you personally went out, interviewed and hire yourself a 15 hour a week maid/ housekeeper instead of hiring a service like Maid Brigade, Merry Maids, ServiceMaster Clean, talk about being a cheap bastard. But it does not stop there, after she worked for you for nine years you would not help her in getting legalized? Wow, what a WITCH, of course I meant it with a “B”.

But your comments on holding employers accountable for hiring undocumented workers real takes the cake, I assume you exempt yourself and your husband, or will you be turning yourself in.

    Meg on holding employers accountable:

Meg you think you can buy the election, but what puzzles many is if you real cared and loved California then why not do your civic duty and vote, seems more rhetoric than anything else. In good times we might give you a try but not in our disaster mode that we find ourselves in after that so-called outsider Independent Republican, named Arnold Schwarzenegger (sold to us by radio personalities John and Ken), ruined our state, yah we will trust another one of you liars, think not. You can’t buy everything! What a waste of money!

Your last line (regarding the idea that Ms. Whitman may have thought that her maid couldn’t read English) from the copy and paste above, reads very racist. Your column talks about your concerns about hate speech — yet you’re doing it, here, (putting labels on people) in your column. Of course Ms. Whitman knew her maid could read english! Why else would Meg’s husband, Griffith, write Nicandra a note to look into the matter concerning the letter they received from the Social Security department…? Also -why in the world would any maid sift through their employer’s trash and read letters that aren’t addressed to them?

Re: “But that’s my take, the view of a Latina of an undocumented immigrant father, a humanitarian who sees this undocumented maid as a person who has been exploited by a woman who views herself as superior.”

The only woman proven to be exploiting Nicandra is Gloria Allred!

Here’s the deal — I don’t think this matter is as easy to make-out as you paint it: ‘Villainous business woman who believes herself to be superior to those she employs AND isn’t certain if her Latina maid can read English is a fraud and a liar.’ There’s only one person we know who has actually been proven to be a liar and that’s Nicandra Díaz de Santillán. Maybe Ms. Whitman will be proven to be a liar, too. I don’t know AND neither do you.

Here’s what I think Ms. Whitman should do: If she’s been honest about the facts in this matter – she should file a million dollar lawsuit (this week) against Gloria Allred for defamation of character AND after she wins her case — give ALL of the $$ to Nicandra Díaz de Santillán. Case closed!

  3. Correction to my original post: “…from the copy and paste above, reads very racist.” should be “…from the copy and paste above, reads very bigoted.”

BTW — I don’t think you are a racist or bigot.

  4. Hi Todd,

    Thanks for your thoughts.

I have a few more of my own:

I don’t care if the maid lied about her status. I’d do the same thing. In my eyes, it’s not a crime to flee a country where you’re so poor you can barely feed your children to enter a foreign country to work. I would do the same. So would you. That she lied to take a $23 an hour job cleaning the house of a millionaire is something I’d do too if I were in her shoes. I have no problem with that. BUT that the millionaire who hired her cheated her out of pay by piling on the workload and not increasing her hours is despicable, regardless of the woman’s immigration status. That she insinuated to Diaz that she’d lose her job if she left on maternity leave, after years of service, is cruel.

    Do I make sense?

  5. Hi Cindy,

Regarding those who flee their country (whether legally or illegally) to find a better way of life for themselves and their families: I agree with you. I have argued with people (who don’t understand the dynamic of the matter) many times. Most folks who cross the border illegally are doing so to survive. This is precisely why I do not fault Nicandra for lying to gain employment in this country. My stating that Nicandra was the only one proven to be a liar (in this matter) was to counter your claim that Ms. Whitman is a liar. We, just, don’t know (for sure). It may be proven later — but we don’t know YET.

My beef is with Gloria Allred for exploiting Nicandra for the political gain of Jerry Brown. If memory serves, Gloria Allred is seeking $6,200.00 for Nicandra. This is to cover unpaid overtime and mileage. In my opinion this is an a-typical case for Gloria Allred. She normally takes on and chases six and seven figure settlement cases. In my opinion, she took this case on for tv “face-time” AND to destroy Ms. Whitman. This is why (and I know I’m dreaming here) that I think it would be wonderful if Ms. Whitman would file a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Gloria Allred for defamation of character AND if she wins the case — give ALL of the settlement money to Nicandra. I say this because I believe that Gloria Allred is exploiting Nicandra a great deal more (say seventy-five times more) than any exploitation of Nicandra that Ms. Whitman is accused of. (I’d love to see some of Ms. Allred’s millions go into Nicandra’s bank account. This for exploiting Nicandra so terribly).

When I was eighteen (30 years ago) I voted for Jerry Brown. Looking back, I feel that was a mistake. I like Jerry Brown (the man — not the politician). Born, raised and currently living in California, I cannot stomach the idea of Jerry Brown being our governor again. In my opinion, he is part of the problem. California is like a small country. Our sales tax is currently at 10% – we have the highest gas tax in the nation and our property taxes (less those protected by Prop 13) is through the roof. To this, we have a good many other taxes and fees that are outrageous. How our state is not in the black is beyond me. We must correct this now AND Jerry Brown is definitely not the answer. I really wish George Deukmejian was on this ticket and opposing Jerry Brown (instead of Ms. Whitman).

I am a registered Republican who: 1) Voted against George Bush Sr. (when he ran for his second term). 2) Sent a damning e-mail to George W. Bush (when he was running for his second term). 3) Voted for Barbara Boxer (for her first term) 4) Voted for Obama (which I am really regretting now).

I am furious with Gloria Allred for exploiting Nicandra and am furious that this matter may help Jerry Brown. I want justice for Nicandra and want California to thrive again.
